The ability to see the whole picture. The ability to zoom out, in other words. Most zoom in, for the most part.
Your favorite quality in a woman?
The ability to see the whole picture. The ability the zoom out, in other words. And heavy eyebrows.
What do you most appreciate in your friends?
- a) The little smile that shows they understand it’s never really possible to capture reality in words. But at the same time
- b) their constant attempts to capture reality in words.
Your greatest weakness?
A flirtation with sentimentality.
Your favorite past time?
Taking baths. Every time I sink down into the heat I think, “I can’t believe this is legal.”
What is your definition of happiness?
Walking into Barnes & Noble at Union Square in New York and smelling the newly printed books and black coffee.
What is misery to you?
When there’s not enough hot water and you end up in a lukewarm bath. Being surrounded by water that’s too cold creates an existential anguish, like being in a uterus that wants to kick you out.
If you weren’t you, who would you be?
Marina Abramovic. She seems to be able to look someone in the eye and get that person to stop playing games. It must be a useful ability to have.

Giorgos Seferis. Bob Dylan.

Lars Norén in The Diary of Lars Norén. All other characters are just characters.

Composers: Paul Simon. Mikis Theodorakis. Bellman.

Your favorite real-life heroes?
I am fascinated by people who have voluntarily pulled themselves out of public life. Bob Dylan. Lars Norén, JD Salinger, among others.
Your favorite food and drink?
I like food that can be shoveled into an open mouth without needing to look down at your plate. Spaghetti carbonara and things like that.
What I hate the most?
Bad personal chemistry. Both are fighting for their lives, both lose – and no one can talk about the terrible things that are happening.
What natural talent I wish I had?
I’d like to be able to pick up a guitar and toss off a song. Like ‘Bridge over Troubled Water.”
What is your current state of mind?
I’ve felt largely about the same since 1982. Four plus on a scale of one to five.
